Otolaryngology is a medical specialist on disorders and diseases of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) region, and also related areas of the head and neck. If you have a problem with your ears, nose, or throat, you should consult an ENT specialist, also known as an ear, nose, and throat doctor, or an otolaryngologist. In addition to graduating from medical school, a board-certified ENT specialist has completed at least five years of specialty training and passed a Board of Otolaryngology certification examination (usually four years). ENT specialists are trained to treat diseases of the head, neck, and face, as well as tumors, trauma, and deformities. ENT specialists can perform cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in these areas. They can also treat head and neck nerve problems that control vision, smell, hearing, and facial movements.
