ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

Orthopaedic surgery can alleviate pain and improve function, allowing patients to resume normal activities. Pain reduces people's ability to function, so the two often go hand in hand. An arthritic hip, for example, will be held stiffly, with pain preventing people from walking, standing, or sitting comfortably, rather than the extent of arthritis in the hip itself. Only in rare cases does arthritis become so severe that the hip becomes fused, preventing movement. In the body, pain serves a protective function. If we injure ourselves, the pain we feel reminds us not to use (and further injure) the injured area. One of the most significant advantages of modern orthopaedics is that we now have effective treatments for many incredibly painful and disabling conditions. A microdiscectomy, for example, is an effective treatment for relieving sciatica. The disc fragment causing nerve inflammation and irritation is removed through a small incision. This procedure, which takes less than an hour and often only requires an overnight stay, provides dramatic relief from leg pain, and patients can resume most of their normal activities within a few weeks of surgery. Joint replacement has seen some of the most dramatic advancements. We have now effective replacement parts for the greater part of the body's major joints. Approaches to these operations have been refined over time, are generally muscle-sparing, and allow for rapid recovery to normal function with a three to a four-day hospital stay. Many of the complications that plagued joint replacement surgery in the past have been addressed. Infection rates are now very low, and effective coagulation therapy is available to avoid deep vein thrombosis complications.
