Ultrasounds are usually painless and do not necessarily entail the use of needles or cuts. The transducer, or ultrasound device, simply rubs against the patient's skin over the area being examined. High-frequency sound waves are transmitted from the probe into the body via the gel and collected by the transducer. The sound waves are then used by a computer to generate an image, which is then displayed on a screen. Unlike other screening procedures, ultrasounds do not use radiation and instead rely on sound waves and echoes to generate images known as sonograms. Patients are not exposed to ionizing radiation as a result, making the procedure safer than X-rays and CT scans.
